Hummingbird migration 2013 Part 1

The hummingbirds started migrating through my place a couple of weeks early this year.  I reviewed my migration photos of previous years and the most hummers I had were the last week of August and first week of September.

A friend commented on some of the pictures I had posted on my Facebook page that she hadn’t seen a hummingbird at her feeder.  I asked if she was using that tongue tumor causing red stuff.  She said that she was using sugar water.  My next question was when was the last time you cleaned it and changed the sugar water?  Oh about two or three months ago.  That’s your problem, you need to be changing it out every 4 or 5 days.  Imagine how sweet tea sitting out in the hot sun for two or three months would taste.  Nasty!!!!

To make sugar water, use one part sugar and four parts hot water. Let cool and pour into your feeder.  Clean feeders with 10% clorox and water or full strength vinegar.

To prevent ants from getting into your feeder, construct this low cost ant moat.

we had red throated hummers starting about 2 weeks ago but in the last 5 days they seem to have moved on.
